Velvet Scoters and Waxwings

Yesterday there were 3 Velvet Scoters on the Mere, feeding then sleeping south of Swan Island. Near enough for a few phone scoped pics in changeable conditions.

They were still there this morning but further away unfortunately.

They had a kip for a fair old while

This morning I walked through to Sigglesthorne to see if any Waxwings were still about near the garden centre. I found 14 of them near the road junction and followed them along the road to the garden centre where they were feeding on berries. They flew back and forth to the junction a couple of times but always came back to the trees that had most berries.

A Mistle Thrush was with the Waxwings for short time but it didn't stay long. Pinched a berry or two and hopped it.

Nearly a good pic of Mistle Thrush

I walked back through the fields and along the south side of the Mere to check what was in the set aside. The finch flock was there as usual, but only about 50 Linnet today, with Greenfinch(2) Goldfinch(c10) Chaffinch(c20) Reed Bunting(5+) and 3 Tree Sparrow!! The Tree Sparrow population has grown by 50% since I last visited 🤣

Yesterday at home we had 7 Roe Deer basking in the sun along the field edge behind the house. Great to see them chilling.

Seven Roe Deer - the most we've seen at any one time here
